Spring and Beech trees

Marcescence

Bob Gore

Spring 2021 officially begins on Saturday in the early morning.  What better time to talk about the Beech tree, a wonderful example of the overlapping of seasons?  Beech trees are easy to identify in the winter because they do not drop their leaves when they wither but hold onto them into the beginning of spring.  In this photo by Bob Gore you can see the new buds which will become this year's leaves next to the remnants of last year's leaves.  This process is called marcescence.

The Spring Equinox feels particularly special this year, as everyone I know is ready to emerge from the winter.  And as we seem closer and closer to emerging from the isolation of the past year I wish everyone safe passage into spring.
