Martin Luther King Jr. Day Volunteering
Spend this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day volunteering! We have a variety of opportunities including invasive plant removal, landscape restoration, transporting and building benches, and spreading mulch to protect the trees in the middle of the parking lot. Activities will be from 9 AM - 12 PM. Please let us know if you're interested by emailing Susie Farmer.
Invasive plant removal (oriental bittersweet or autumn olive): For this project, we will be walking out on the trails to remove the invasive plants. Participants can bring their own work gloves and loppers if they would like, but we do have some to share. Participants should wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, dress for working outside, and bring their own water bottles.
Landscape restoration: For this project, we will be working on restoring a meadow. Participants should bring their own work gloves, spades, mattocks, garden rakes, or loppers. Participants should wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, dress for working outside, and bring their own water bottles.
Transporting and building benches: This project will require a good amount of physical labor and strength. We will be transporting the supplies to build several benches on the trails at Ivy Creek Natural Area. The supplies will be provided but must be carried to the building sites, holes dug with a post-hole digger, and then the benches built on-site. All tools will be provided, but if you have work gloves that you prefer, you are welcome to bring them. All work will take place outside so it is important to dress for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes, and bring plenty of water as work will be done on the trails away from water sources.
Spreading mulch: The ground around the trees in the parking lot island was recently aerated to improve the health of the trees, and now the tree roots need to be protected by spreading a thick layer of mulch. Participants should wear long pants, closed-toed shoes, dress for working outside, and bring their own water bottles.
