World Migratory Bird Day

WMBD flyer

Join us as we mark the 30th anniversary of International (now World) Migratory Bird Day with one of its co-founders - Dr. Jamie K. Reaser! Started as a celebration in the Western Hemisphere in 1993, the event went global in 2006 and is now celebrated on every continent except Antarctica. Our local observance will begin at Ivy Creek Natural Area and Historic River View Farm with a bird walk at 8:00 AM, led by members of the Piedmont Virginia Bird Club, and continue at 10:00 AM with a reading, discussion, and book signing of "Dawn Songs: A Birdwatcher's Field Guide to the Poetics of Migration." This recently-released book, co-edited by Drs. Jamie K. Reaser and J. Drew Lanham, brings poetry and prose together from both well-established and lesser-known authors on migratory birds and the phenomenon of migration. Proceeds from the book (which will be available for sale at the event for $20) will go to the American Bird Conservancy's Conservation and Environmental Justice program, which seeks to expand the intersections between biodiversity conservation and environmental justice. Come explore the wonderful world of migratory birds! Note: Please bring cash or check if you wish to purchase books.
