Native Perennials for Wildlife:  Design and Care

Lily Fox-Bruguiere was born and raised in Charlottesville and has spent her professional career in the world of gardens. Lily worked as a gardener for four years in New York City, receiving her Certificate in Horticulture from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in 2004, then came back to Charlottesville to work in the gardens at Monticello for several years. After receiving her Master's degree at UVA in Architectural and Landscape History in 2010, she returned to Monticello for a ten-year position as the Garden and Outreach Coordinator at the Center for Historic Plants. Lily started her own garden design business in 2022 to create naturalistic gardens featuring predominantly native plants that are thoughtful, abundant, functional and beautiful for the benefit of people and wildlife.

Jefferson Chapter Virginia Native Plant Society meetings are held on the second Wednesday (except during the summer) starting at 7:00 PM in the Education Building at Ivy Creek Natural Area and Historic River View Farm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Second Fridays Under the Stars

Under The Stars is scheduled for the second Friday of every month in 2024.  Learn about upcoming celestial events in a short lecture given in the education building at 7:00 PM.  Afterwards, go outside where local area amateur astronomers will help point out constellations, planets, nebulae, star clusters, and distant galaxies.  Have a look through telescopes of the Charlottesville Astronomical Society, or bring your own.   Telescopes will be in the field next to the parking lot at the Ivy Creek Natural Area.

Cloudy skies cancel the outdoor portion.

Although this event is free and open to the public, we ask that you contact the Charlottesville Astronomical Society at vicepresident@cvilleastro.com if you plan to attend.  Only if at least one visitor makes contact and confirms attendance, can the CAS guarantee that they will be at Ivy Creek for their presentation and telescope observing session.

October Native Plant Walk

On October 12 (note change from third Saturday) from 9:00 - 11:30 AM, join Phil Stokes, Jefferson Chapter Virginia Native Plant Society member, to learn more about identifying Ivy Creek’s trees in early autumn.  As well as bark and leaf shape, fall color, fruits, and nuts can all be useful clues at this time of year.  Co-sponsors: Jefferson Chapter, VNPS, and Ivy Creek Natural Area.  Meet by the kiosk near the parking lot. Free and open to the public.

Scenically shadowed by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Ivy Creek Natural Area (ICNA) is a 219-acre preserve bordering the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville, Virginia.

With seven miles of trails traversing a mix of upland woods, pine stands, fields, streams, and shoreline, ICNA is an ideal site to learn about the rich natural history characteristic of Central Virginia.
