Annual Meeting and Ivy Talk

Join us for our Annual Meeting and an Ivy Talk on Mrs. Mary Carr Greer and the Talented Tenth. Learn about how River View Farm's Mrs. Mary Carr Greer, through her work as a teacher, principal, club organizer, and active community leader, would be designated a member of the Talented Tenth.

The Talented Tenth, a term popularized by civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois in the early twentieth century, commonly describes the leadership class of African Americans. Members of this class typically received higher education and then went on to assume positions related to education or religion in their communities, where they utilized their experiences to enact social change.

Our speaker, Olivia Brubaker, is the program coordinator at the Ivy Creek Foundation. She graduated from Christopher Newport University in May 2024 with a Bachelor's in History and minors in Literature, Leadership, and Women;s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

This will be in person at the Education Building at Ivy Creek Natural Area and Historic River View Farm. Registration: https://app.dvforms.net/api/dv/g0A8Y

About Ivy Creek

Scenically shadowed by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Ivy Creek Natural Area (ICNA) is a 219-acre preserve bordering the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville, Virginia.

With seven miles of trails traversing a mix of upland woods, pine stands, fields, streams, and shoreline, ICNA is an ideal site to learn about the rich natural history characteristic of Central Virginia.
