A Walk Through a Riparian Habitat
"Riparian" refers to the habitat along streams, rivers and lakes, where the flora and fauna is strongly influenced by the presence of water. Riparian areas are particularly vital to wildlife, as they provide water, shelter, and food necessary for survival.
The Peninsula Trail Loop begins through upland deciduous forest roughly following the original streambed of Ivy Creek. It returns along the shore of the Rivanna Reservoir. Round trip distance is one mile.
Some of the highlights of your walk may include sightings of aquatic wildlife such as beaver and Great Blue Heron; trees such as persimmon and American chestnut; and the evergreen plants mountain laurel and haircap moss.
Begin your walk by following the loop trail walking clockwise. As you come upon benches, refer to numbered stops and the corresponding information.
