Bench 3. Abundant Aquatic Wildlife

As you take a rest on Bench 3, look and listen for these animals associated with the aquatic habitat here:

Birds: Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Killdeer, Kingfisher, Solitary Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper, Wood Duck, Canada Goose, Mallard, Osprey

Mammals: beaver, river otter, deer

Reptiles: northern water snake, snapping turtle,
painted turtle (photo)

Amphibians: Fowler's toad, cricket frog, gray treefrog, spring peepers, green frog, bullfrog

Note: Directly behind Bench 3 is a persimmon tree with
its mouth-puckering fruit that turns sweet by the first frost. Wildlife relish the ripe fruit. It is said that, “Most ‘possum' hunts end at the bottom of a ‘simmon’ tree."
