The Real Dirt on Pesticides

The Garden Club of Virginia's conservation forum  "The Real Dirt on Pesticides: Pollinators, Food and our Health" will be held at the Paramount Theater in downtown Charlottesville on October 25th at 8:30 am.  This is a timely subject especially after the recent court decision ordering Monsanto/Bayer pay to pay $289 million dollars to a school groundskeeper who developed terminal cancer after years of spraying Round-up.  Studies on the dangers and lingering toxicity of pesticides are often unclear, yet these chemicals continue to be sprayed freely in our neighborhoods and on our food.

They have assembled a panel of experts to share the latest research on this topic which I liken to tobacco. No one could point to a lung tumor and directly link it to cigarettes, but knew that it was a factor in developing cancer. Are pesticides a sleeping gun? The World Health Organization classified the compound glyphosate (the active ingredient in Round-up), as a probable carcinogen causing cancer in 2015, yet the general public still uses it. Come learn more about this especially as it relates to younger and older populations.

Open to the public at a ticket cost of $30. Information and tickets at http://www.gcvirginia.org or phone (804) 643-4137.
